Indian Ringnecks.
Although we no longer raise Indian Ringnecks here at Bird Heaven Aviaries I want to leave this page up as a reference page for those who wanting to share their lives with one of these exotic beauties.
With their exotic sleek look and stunning colors, it's no suprise that Indian Ringnecks have been kept as pets for many thousands of years. Their long sleek bodies and gorgeous colors and their hairlike feathers make them some of the most visually appealling birds available today. Indian Ringnecks are a medium sized parrot. They're bodies are about the size of Hahns Macaw although they have an very long tail that is about twice the size of their body. They are not a very noisy bird although like most birds they can be rather vocal at dawn & dusk. Some will get pretty loud when they vocalise during the day.

Pet Quality With a life span of upwards of 25 - 30 years, making the decision to bring an Indian Ringneck, well not just a Ringneck, any bird for that matter is a lifetime choice. I highly recommend thoroughly researching the species first before purchasing a bird. Hopefully this page can help make the decision a little easier for you. In our experience here rasing Ringnecks over the last 5 years, Indian Ringnecks do make excellent pets, however if your looking for a pet that loves to cuddle I wouldn't recommend on of these gems. Ringnecks, we've found are more of a hands off bird. They're more than happy to step up on your hand and just hang out with you as you go about your day. Despite the fact that they don't enjoy being petted all that much they do enjoy human interaction and will often initiate interaction with their favorite human.

Indian Ringnecks do enjoy spending alot of time out of their cages and we recommend giving them a minimun of 3 hours a day of out of cage play time. Obviously 3 hours is alot and we realise alot of people work so you can always adjust your birds time out of the cage time to your schedule. They love to have plenty of toys of different textures to play with. Indian Ringnecks are intelligent birds and love puzzle kind of toys. Toys where you need to fit shaped blocks through the correct shaped hole are great. They also love veggie tanned leather so any toys that have lots of knots for them to chew at are good also. Indian Ringnecks love to chew wood so be sure to always have some wooden chew toys on hand. Just remember to choose toys that are smaller size as lot of the medium & large size toys they make for amazons & African Greys tend to be made of harder wood which difficult for Indian Ringnecks to chew through.
Indian Ringecks need to be housed in a good quality wrought iron cage. Kings Cages & California Cages make some great cages for these sized birds. The Cage needs to be big enough so that the bird has enough room to flap it's wings with out hitting itself on the cage bars. Here we use both Wooden, Rope & Sanded Comfy perches for Ringnecks. Wooden perches are fine as it gives them something extra to chew on, however we always recommend having a rope and comfy perche in as well. Rope Perches provide an uneven surface for your bird to stand & walk on. They also help to eliminate pressure points that can build up over time from standing on wooden dowels. The Sanded Comfy Perches are good as they help keep the nails trim. Although they don't sand the nails completely back they do help blunt the point of the nail which doesn't make as sharp when you pick up your baby. As for Diet etc. Ringnecks LOVE to eat. It's one of their favorite pass times. We fed our birds a huge variety of Fruits & Veggies. All of which can be found on our Recipe Page. As well as the cooked foods they would devour, fresh fruits such as oranges, apples, Cantaloupe. They loved Romaine & Red Leaf lettuce. They also love spinach, Collard & Mustard Greens. We've never known an Indian Ringneck to turn down a pomegranite. Give them a half a one and we can garantee that your bird will come up with red juice all over it's feathers making it look like it just took a blood bath.
