Soak 'n' Cook Along with the fresh veggies & fruit that we feed our birds, we also feed them a good soak n cook mix. This includes, Paddy Rice, Trapper Peas, Green Split Peas, Red Wheat, Whole Soy Beans & Red Beans. I also add to this fresh, chopped veggies & Fruit, Rainbow Pasta &/or Brown Rice. I also mix in 2 spoonfuls of plain Non Fat Yogurt. Our Companion Birds go crazy for this. We also feed this to our breeder birds as well. For the softbill I just put some of the mix through the food processor or Blender and feed it to them in small pieces.

Bird Heaven Aviairies Fruit & Veggie Mix.
Ingredients 12 Grain Wheat Bread 6 Eggs 1 pack of Rainbow Pasta - 8oz Brocolli Crowns Red/Green Bell Peppers Red Cabbage Cauliflower Carrots - Washed & Peeled Yams Red Leaf/ Romaine Lettuce Collard/Mustard Greens. Celery Apple Orange Cantaloupe Pineapple KiwiFruit Banana Plain Non Fat Yogurt Please keep in mind that I don't use every single one of the vegetables/fruits mentioned above. Most of them are seasonal & I use them only when available. You don't need to use all the ingrediants in every serving. Somedays I'll leave a few out and serve them the day after with some different things.
Please remember that I make a large amount of this each day as I feed it to all our breeder birds. You can adjust the amount you use to suit the size of your flock. This will keep in the refrigerator for about 3 days. You can also make enough to last a week and freeze it in small amounts in zip lock bags and just thaw it out, the night before you use it.
1) Toast about 3-4 slices of the 12 Grain Wheat Bread. 2) Hard Boil the eggs 3) Put Pasta in Food Processor to cut into in smaller piece. 4) Boil Pasta 5) Chop Yams in small chunks and boil until soft - don't make them to mushy. 6) Chop Brocolli, Bell Peppers, Cauliflower, Carrots & Celery in Food Processor - Not all once chop each different vegetable and rinse the processor before chopping other Veggies. 7) Chop Apple, Orange, Cantaloupe, Pineapple, Kiwifruit ( discard the furry skin ) Banana, in the Food Processor - again, Chop 1 fruit at a time and clean. 8) When the toast is done you can crumble it into small bite sized chunks & place in a large bowl. 9) Peel the shell off the eggs, mash the eggs and add to the large bowl. 10) Drain and rinse pasta, let cool for a few minutes and add to the large bowl. 11) Drain and rinse Yams, let cool for a few minutes & add to the large bowl. 12) Add all the chopped fruit and veggies and mix together. 13) Finally add 2 level tablespoons of Plain Non Fat Yogurt and stir through the mix really well 14) Serve to your birds. 15) Remember that cooked foods spoil after a few hours of being left out. Always remove the cooked foods after 3 hours & replace with some more if needed. During the summer months when it's really warm I only leave the cooked foods in for 2 hours before removing them.
Soak N Cook Mix.
Ingredients 4 cups of Nature Song Soak n Cook Mix - I buy ours at Wesport in Fresno, CA - see the links page for their contact details A selection of the same vegetables mentioned in the "Bird Heaven Aviaires Mix" above. A selection of the same Fruit mention in the same Mix.
Soak the Soak n Cook Mix in water for at least 60 - 90 minutes. Bring the mix to a boil and cook for another 30 minutes. Let the mix stand for 20 minutes. I make 2 bowls of this. I divide the soak n cook mix equally over the 2 bowls. Equally distribute the chopped fruits and veggies over the 2 bowls and mix them together. Add 2 level tablespoons of plain non fat yogurt and stir through. Serve to your birds :)
One thing that's important to remember is that companion birds are lot like people. They too have likes and dislikes and it's no different when it comes to the food that they eat. Like a young child left unsupervised, a parrot left to it's own devices will make wrong choices about it what it eats. We do our absolute best here at Bird Heaven Aviaries to provide your baby with a healthy well balanced diet of fresh & cooked veggies & fruits. Quality dried fruit and nut mixes as well high quality seed & pellet mixes. When trying to convert your bird to a better diet remember that patience is the key. Some companion birds are notoriously stubborn when it comes to wanting to try new things. For some good tips on converting your birds to a healthier diet go here.
