African Ringnecks.
Here at Bird Heaven Aviaries we have 2 pairs of African Ringnecks. Also known as the African Rose Ringed Parakeets. Our 1st pair came to us from a lady close to the Mexico/California border. They were a young pair who were bonded and were mating but hadn't produced any young at that time. We placed this pair in a large flight that was 7ft deep, 2.5ft wide & 8ft tall. We gave them a nige big "L" shaped nest box and they bred for us this year. Our second pair consists of "Tiki," who was our pet, and a beautiful older male. We decided to put her out to breed as the African Ringnecks are hard to come by. We searched forever to find her a male and Shanna from www.coloronthewing.com was kind enough to lend us her male on a breeder loan for 2 years. He is almost 12 years old and in gorgeous feather. He and Tiki are bonding and often perch next to each other and look out for each other too. Tiki is still very much a sweetheart and loves to give me a quick cuddle when I'm out feeding the other birds.

This is our first pair we bought way down near San Diego.
Here is the male we have on loan from Shanna @ www.coloronthewing.com Notice the beautiful lavender shade on his nape. As the male African's age the lavender color becomes more vibrant.
This is the male from our first pair. Notice with the African Ringnecks the color of the beak. The Africans have a Plum colored upper & Lower mandibles. Whereas their Indian Cousins have ligher red/orange color.
One thing you will notice with Male Africans is the thickness of the Ring under their Mandible. The Male Africans ring is alot thicker than the Indian Ringnecks.
**NOTE** Although we no longer raise Indian Ringnecks I've left our Indian Ringneck page open for reference use. CLICK HERE to view this page.

This here is Tiki's Mate. They're very bonded and he is a proven Male. So we're hoping for babies from this pair this year.

African Ringnecks are exactly like their Indian Cousins when it comes to their diet. These guys love to eat. Ours are fed fresh fruits & Veggies daily as well as our soak n cook mixes and they also have cooked brown rice & Pasta added. During the breeding season they get some hard boiled eggs every 3 days as well. Along with the Veggies our African Ringnecks are given a large hookbill mix. We do add Sunflower seed to their diet during the breeding season. Most females tend to lose weight during the egg laying process so along with keeping their calcium levels up, we add the sunflower seed to keep so that they can keep their weight up. Sunflower seeds are high in fat and are only given here during the breeding season. If it's a very cold winter then we will add some every few days during the winter months too. CAGES & TOYS African Ringnecks have a large tail - about twice the size of their body. So a wrought iron cage such as one that is suitable for a small Amazon or African Grey would be great. However like most birds, Ringnecks do enjoy time out fo the cage so be sure to purchase a suitable playgym for your bird as well. There are playgym that can be moved from room to room so you have your Ringneck friend with you as you go about your household chores. There are also some great Sanded Manzanita or Ribbonwood playgyms that you can purchase too. These are quite attractive and wont stand out in your living room. As for toys, Ringnecks, we've found to be very curious and love to play with a wide variety of toys. Toys that suitable for small and medium sized parrots are best. They love toys that have a variety of textures as well. Toys that are made from Vegetable Tanned Leather and tied into an abundance of knots are great and will keep your Ringneck busy for hours. Puzzle toys as well that have different shaped blocks that can only be placed in or taken out of clear plastic case are great & will keep your feathered friend busy for hours. Whilst African Ringnecks like to chew it's probably not best to buy large toys that are full of wood. It will take forever for them to chew threw it all but at the same time you will be cleaning alot of poop off it too. Hard Plastic is another great material to use too. You can buy Acrylic toys that have all kinds of great parts on them and will help keep your Ringneck occupied too.
